So I hit a deer a few days ago. Yeah, it sucked. I was driving from San Marcos to New Braunfels when some dumb deer (and say it with me now) CAME OUT OF NOWHERE!
I slammed the brakes and tried to steer away, but I smacked it something fierce. The poor doe flew and twirled in the air and crashed and rolled across the blacktop. I was sure I'd broken its spine, but I saw the creature get up and limp away. I'm sure it died from internal bleeding in the wilderness. My truck could still run, so I drove home and dealt with the insurance folks in the morning. But when I tried to take the pick-up on the interstate, the engine started acting weird and went kaput on me. I couldn't get the thing to really go over 40 MPH. I had to turn around and retreat on the sides of the surface streets and frontage roads with my hazard flights flashing. I was able to get a tow truck the next day, and I figured I'd bite the bullet and rent a car for the week or so I was without a truck. I called Budget Car Rentals...they didn't have any cars. Not one single available car. I called Avis...they didn't have any cars either. Weird, right? I called good old Hertz... they didn't have any cars and didn't know when they'd have one. I called enterprise and a lady told me someone could pick me up in a hour. Yes! A few minutes later she called me back and was sad to report that they were actually out of cars and shouldn't have taken my reservation in the first place. So yeah. That's a thing. So I had to go a while basically being trapped in my house. I mean I could walk to a few places. I had to take an overpriced taxi one time. And I was happy that the best pizza place in town is right around the block. Anyway, now I have wheels, but I don't know when my truck will be back in shape. This is the fourth of fifth time it's been in the body shop since I bought it in 2005. Oddly, this is the first accident the truck has been in where it was actually in motion! All the other times the poor pick-up has been parked and minding its own business. Stupid deer.
